Church Day

Last Sunday our church here in Holland had an afternoon "church day." We all loaded up as soon as the service dismissed and headed to a nearby town to a farm for food and fellowship. We had Dutch pancakes (basically crepes) as a noontime snack and then played games and talked with others during the afternoon. Our group was responsible for organizing the games for the kids, and they had a great time with a three-legged race and a Dutch version of tag. We also introduced an old Palmcroft favorite, Hunter/Bear/Ninja, which is like Paper/Rock/Scissors but you stand back to back and then jump around either as a Hunter, Bear, or Ninja. Another group had also planned activities for the adults. It was our first experience with wooded shoe golf, which is apparently a Dutch tradition. There was a short miniature golf course set up and the putters are actual wooden shoes on a stick. Jeremy agreed to play, though golf is not his favorite sport. While they were playing, they also had a group being led by one of the church members doing aerobics! It looked like they were having a good time as they worked up an appetite for the evening barbeque that was planned. They love to have barbeques in Holland when the weather is good (which we were blessed with on that day), but Dutch barbeques are a little different than in America. They serve all kinds of meat and garlic bread. Jeremy thought it was great! Of course, so did Kaylie; our little carnivore had 3 helpings! There was also pasta salad, which Keiric really enjoyed, but it must have been brought by an International. They ended the evening by singing praise songs in a group and handing out popsicles for dessert. Our good weather also ended promptly after the BBQ as the wind picked up and it turned cold. We headed home after dark, tired from the long day, but contented with the many opportunities we had to talk with other members in the church. We are part of a great church body here, and were blessed to be able to interact with and encourage them.
