This story was recounted to me this morning at my women's Bible study and very clearly illustrates this generation's perspective on the Bible here in The Netherlands.
A friend is a teacher in an elementary school here and during Christmas had a small nativity scene set up on display.
Teacher: "Who can tell me who the lady is in this scene?"
Not a single student raised his hand.
Teacher: "I'll give you a hint: She's holding a baby, so who do you think she is?"
One brave little hand sneaked up and replied, "the babysitter?"
Not only is there little interest in the Bible or spiritual things, but out of an entire classroom of students, not even one could recognize Mary in a nativity scene. Kinda scary when you think of the long history of Protestant and even Catholic religion in this country.
